Recently i got an e-mail asking how to enable or disable registry Editor (regedit) on Windows. For some reason the guy wasn’t able to edit registry using Windows default registry editor. I asked him about his account type. He told me that he is using Admin account, he doesn’t know why he can’t access the Registry using Regedit. Some maleware can also prevent editing the Registry to protect its own removal from system. To Enable or Disable regedit on Windows (Xp Pro and Vista) you can use Windows Group Policy Editor tool. Follow these steps to use this tool:

  1. Log on as Administrator on you pc. For Windows Xp go to Start > Run. For Vista Click on Start Then type in gpedit.msc and hit Enter on your Keyboard.
  2. Yo will see the Group Policy Editor. Then navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System.
  3. Now find and double-click on Prevent access to registry editing tools Then select either Disabled or Not Configured and Click OK.
  4. Now close the Group Policy Editor and restart your PC.

If you don’t have Group Policy Editor on your version Windows, scan you pc for malewares using a good Anti-Malware software.

  1. We did not find ” Prevent access to registry editing tools” in system (gpedit.msc)
Please revert so that we can use this specification.

    Thanks,
